In today's scripture lesson we hear the story of the transfiguration. In this vision Peter, James, and John are given a glimpse of the glorified Christ, a vision that points them (and us) to the nature of Jesus. Understandably the disciples aren't sure what to make of it at the time. Peter suggests that they stay a while but this is the very thing they cannot do. There is work to be done and that work is not found on the mountain top but down in the valley. The same is true for us. While we give thanks for our mountaintop experiences which serve to encourage and to renew, the work to which we are called as disciples take place in between such experiences. We cannot forsake one for the other.
